The
City of Crestwood is proud to have the Thomas Sappington Museum
as part of the Crestwood Park system. The home built in 1808
by slave labor is on the National Register of Historic Places.
In addition to the museum, the Sappington Complex includes the
Sappington Barn restaurant, gift shop and the Library of Americana,
which includes resources on American History and Decorative
Arts. The
complex is open Wednesday – Friday and staffed by over
100 volunteers that operate the gift shop, library and act as
docents in the museum. The City owns the complex, and has a
cooperative relationship by City Ordinance with the Sappington
House Foundation in the operation and maintenance of the facilities.
The restaurant while owned by the City is operated by a private
contractor and is open when the complex is open to the public
and for special events and private parties. Further information
about the complex can be obtained by calling (314)822-8171.
Tours of the facility are available from 11 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.,
Wednesday through Friday and by appointment on Saturdays. Admission
to the Sappington House is $3.00 for adults and $1.00 for children.
Special group tours of the house may be arranged by calling
the Resident Manager at (314)822-8171. A videotaped tour of
the house with its history is available for individuals who
are not able to physically tour the Sappington Museum. The closed-captioned
video is 19 minutes long and can be viewed in the wheelchair
accessible Library of Americana. Admission fees and times are
the same as for the walking tours.
The Sappington House Library of Americana, a research library
located on the site, is open to the public from 11 a.m. to 2:30
p.m. Tuesday through Friday and from noon to 2:30 p.m. on Saturdays.
Stop by to browse the shelves and expand your knowledge. Phone
(314)822-9469 or (314)822-8171 for more information.
After you finish your tour, be sure to visit the Sappington
House Gift Shop, a fascinating boutique full of unique gift
ideas. The Gift Shop is located in the Sappington Barn Restaurant.

In addition to the Sappington House Complex, the City owns and
maintains the Historic Sappington Cemetery where many of the
Sappington Family are buried. Graves date back to 1811 and include
veterans of the American Revolution, War of 1812, Mexican War,
Civil War and World War I. At a recent Sappington family memorial
service a grave marker was placed for John Sappington recognizing
his service at Valley Forge as George Washington's bodyguard.
