| After a 25-year career as the
founder and director of Missouri Wildlife Rescue Center and,
longing for a more normal lifestyle, Suzie signed on as Crestwood’s
Animal Control Officer in 1998. She brought with her long
years of hands-on wildlife rescue and rehabilitation experience,
facility management expertise and an aptitude for motivating
volunteers. |
Established by the Department of Parks and Recreation in 1979, the
Animal Control Division has offered animal care and control services
to the residents of Crestwood for almost 30 years. It provides
for an Animal Control Officer to pick up stray animals, rescue
injured or ill animals, help residents resolve animal-related
conflicts, enforce animal ordinances, and address wildlife issues
and concerns. At the holdover facility in Whitecliff Park, housing
is provided for impounded animals and adoption services are available
for unclaimed pets.
Volunteers also assist Crestwood’s animal programs. The Animal
Control Board, with volunteer members appointed from each of the
four wards and a chairman-at-large, is charged with the responsibility
for reviewing special licenses, i.e., kennel and cattery applications,
and for monitoring animal control ordinance compliance.
Shelter volunteers walk dogs daily, bathe animals, and assist with
cage cleaning and feeding. Such interaction provides detailed personality
information about the animals that helps in matching them with potential
adopters. Other volunteers assist with special events and programs
hosted by Animal Control.
Founded by Margie Theiss in 1979 to assist Crestwood Animal
Control, Friends of Animals provides funds for the veterinary
care of impounded animals and injured wildlife. Recently,
its scope has been broadened to include the costs of vaccinations
and the neutering procedures required to make non-claimed
stray animals adoption-ready. To keep the fund operational,
owners and adopters are asked to reimburse the Fund for these
expenses.
Area residents interested in finding a way to honor or memorialize
a family member, friend or pet often direct donations to Friends
of Animals. Gifts of $30 or more are publicly recognized on
a Friends plaque located on the foyer wall at the Community
Center. |
Municipal Ordinance requires pet owners to purchase annual
city registration tags for dogs and cats over the age of
four months and stipulates that Crestwood pets must be wearing
both a city tag and a rabies tag at all times.
Year 2010 city tags will be available at the Community Center
, by mail and on line after November 15 and will be sold
until March 1st without penalty. Pet owners are reminded
to bring a rabies vaccination certificate for each animal
to be registered. If that document has been lost or is unavailable
for any reason, ask your veterinarian to provide you with
a print-out of your pet’s vaccination record. Download
